Rich in protein, scuds enable trout to quickly pack on the weight.

Some rivers and streams will have them if the water is moving slow enough for vegetationto take root. Pull up a handful of weeds from the water you fish, expose it to the air, and see what crawls out. Typically, they will be the same color as the weeds you pull up. An old scud will turn yellowish in color and when a scud dies it turns a distinct orange coloration.

Retrieve your scud pattern with a slow hand twist in stillwater, and a dead drift near the bottom in moving water.
